"To Educate is To Free" - José Marti
We support literacy and English Language Acquisiton for school aged children.
Homework Club operates on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, where English Speakers are paired with elementary school children to complete their homework with an emphasis on writing and reading comprehension. All of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language. Tutors are fully supported by a lead tutor, and normally develop lasting relationships with their students and their families.
"I love tutoring and being involved with El. Centro. The relationship with the children I have tutored is very special and they and their parents are examples of bravery and resilience in coming to live in a foreign culture. They are warm and fun to know.
"I tutor to see a child’s eyes light up when he can read a story and the smile on his face when he has done well on a test or gotten a good report card. I love when I am able to smile with my student when we both figure out this “new to me way” of doing long division.
I have been a tutor at El Centro for 4 years now, and I can truly say that this is why I love being a tutor. You really do get back much more than you give." - Dianne Mumola
After school, middle and high schoolers come to El Centro to practice a language exchange. Native Spanish and English speakers participate in art, cultural, and gardening activities to improve their proficiency in both languages. This program has created friendships and bridged a cultural divide in Transyvlania County youth!
